Bob Stott has written to tell us that the consultation period has been extended until the 30th November. We do not know if they are sending out new letters with this information so please spread the word if you can. This extension has come about as a direct result of the Home education forum group requesting it - so we can all make a difference! Jo

Tonight's LEP Article : 'Consulting on home education A group of home educators have given a black mark to County Hall's draft new protocol. The Lancashire Home Education Forum Group spent two years battling to get Lancashire County Council to change its policy. They say a new draft policy does not resolve its issues and have complained that they have not been given long enough to respond. They say long awaited consultation has been "poorly designed and poorly implemented". In a statement the group said: "Many home educators will effectively only have around 10 days to study a complex document, seek any necessary clarification and make a meaningful response." The group has set up a forum for home educators to discuss the new document in order to help people feel informed in their responses. Bob Stott, Lancashire County Council's director with responsibility for education, said: "We have recently reviewed our procedures regarding families who choose to educate their children at home, to better reflect our responsibilities under the law." He said the council had written to the 450 home educators on its register and the consultation is also on the website. He added the consultation closing date had been extended until the end of November in order to allow parents sufficient time to respond. The forum can be found at www.lancs-he.proboards.com.'

Note Bob Stott's comment: 'to better reflect our responsibilities under the law'
'to better reflect' - so he is fully aware that they are still not planning to stay within the law.
Given all the cutbacks elsewhere in the Council it is amazing the LA can still justify carrying out duties that they don't legally have and aren't wanted by home educating families.
